Thank you for stopping by. I’m Amanda. I’m a pastry chef, business owner, DIY-kitchen building ninja, mama of two little ones (Sous Chef #1 is 3 and in playschool, and Sous Chef #2 is a busy one-year old.)….oh, and did I mention that my husband and I live on an apple orchard, so we’re on a never ending quest to figure out how on earth to manage our 5 acres of farm land. We’re….busy.
How did this blog come to be?
In 2008, I decided to go to pastry school. It was in the lead up to Pastry School that I started this blog. At the time, I was working as a travel media relations specialist, and was surrounded by Food/Wine/Travel writers and colleagues. All self proclaimed “foodies”, many were intrigued by the journey I was ready to set off on, and wanted updates. And so, Sweet Pursuits was born. One day on my lunch break, I came across a blog written by a girl who had attended pastry school and there was no looking back. I had to go. This magical place where students wear chef hats and learn classic techniques, work from professional recipes and have lectures about chocolate and yeast. Sign me up. Telling no one, I applied to a year long French Pastry program in Vancouver. When that acceptance letter arrived, it was like I sealed my fate. I was going to be a Pastry Chef.
I started blogging in spring of 2008, just before my first semester began. Following was my journey through a year full of butter, flour, and a few sugar burns thrown in to the mix. After I graduated, I started working in the industry and continued to blog. Over the years, I worked for different restaurants. Had different boyfriends. Different dreams. Lived in different cities.
Fast forward a few years — there is only one boy, a wedding ring, a house, an apple orchard (!), a dog named Piper, and two mini Sous Chefs, Clara (3) and Zach (1). Currently (winter 2017) there is a commercial kitchen in construction in my garage, so that I can stay home with my babies and still bake professionally. I am doing the kitchen build myself…in the hours when my hubby can watch the kiddos. See all those posts here.
My blogging journey was on hold the last couple years as I juggled early stages of Motherhood. There was a lot of personal struggle as I wanted to bake, wanted to be a full-time mama, had responsibilities around the house and orchard, and really just didn’t have time to do it all. Now that I’ve found my stride again and am getting back to baking professionally, and getting better at balancing my time, I decided to reincarnate this blog. It is a mix of baking/pastry posts, recipes, meal planning, plus some other home & lifestyle stuff. Life used to be JUST about pastry, but now, there are so many “sweet” aspects to life! Thanks for stopping by!
