Thank you for stopping by. I’m Amanda, and I know what it’s like to have a full life. I am a mother, wife, an entrepreneur, a homemaker, a community volunteer, a farmer….and there are likely more hats I wear. Specifically, I stay home most days with our 2 year old boy and 4 year old girl. I run my own custom cake studio, and my husband is also self employed. In the summer, we run an Air BnB guest suite. And, we have a 5 acre property with an apple orchard, which we care for ourselves. It is a lot, and no, we don’t have any help.
While we live a very full life, we have been learning what it takes to simplify life so that we can avoid the overwhelm and succeed in wearing the many hats that our life currently requires. After all, when mama is overwhelmed, the whole house feels the stress.
It isn’t easy. And it certainly hasn’t always been sweet. There are many days of stress, of being stretched too thin, of being overwhelmed with being pulled in too many different directions. Days where I just want to throw it all away and be nothing besides a dedicated stay at home mom. And then there are days where I want to dedicate so much more time and energy than I have, to my growing business. Days where I feel like the house is clean and presentable, for once. And days where I looked around and wondered how on earth the house got to be *this* messy. Juggling it all takes a lot of trial and error, a few tears, and at the end of the day, a glass of wine. Sweet Pursuits is a place where I explore the successes (and lessons) of a mama trying to wear all the hats, without losing myself – or my mind – in the process.

About Sweet Pursuits
This blog was started 10 years ago, back in 2008 when I started pastry school. I blogged about my year in school (all of my pastry school posts are all grouped together here. After I graduated, I started working in the industry and continued to blog. Over the years, I worked for different restaurants. Had different boyfriends. Different dreams. Lived in different cities.
Fast forward a few years — there is only one boy, a wedding ring, a house, an apple orchard, a dog named Piper, and two mini Sous Chefs, Clara (4) and Zach (2). I opened a pastry shop. I eventually closed the doors on the walk in business with the intent to do just custom cakes. Last winter, I built a commercial cake studio in our house, and I now do custom wedding and celebration cakes from my cake studio.
My blogging journey was on hold the last couple years as I juggled early stages of Motherhood. There was a lot of personal struggle as I wanted to bake, wanted to be a full-time mama, had responsibilities around the house and orchard, and really just didn’t have time to do it all. I felt like I never had time to clean the house, or to do fun things with the kids.
The last few years have been HARD. Really hard. Trying to do it all, feeling overwhelmed — overwhelmed by all the stuff, all the obligations, by everything. When our son was born, I couldn’t even comprehend making cakes, even though that is why we bought the house/orchard.
Around the time he turned one, something happened — during our late night nursing sessions, I read a few blogs about intentional living, simplified motherhood, and minimalism, and the lightbulb went off.
It’s taken a bit of time, but have found ways of balancing my time, simplifying our home and our schedule, and making time for all the things that matter to me, both personal/family AND professional. For as many blogs as there are out there that cater to the Stay At Home Mom crowd, there wasn’t much out there for people like me who work and manage their families, or who have responsibilities outside of the home.
Sweet Pursuits is a place to share the discoveries, successes and challenges of being a mom trying to juggle it all. Whether you work out of the house, work from home, or don’t work at all but have a lot on your plate, I get it. You’re my tribe.
Join me as I explore homekeeping, parenting, feeding the family, all while juggling work/kids/all of the other things. Life used to be JUST about pastry, but now, there are so many “sweet” aspects to life!
