Ever been into a pastry shop or seen a wedding cake where there are miniature little people, or fruit, or animals, or WHATEVER made out of marzipan? Well for our last week of doing new things, we made just that. A menagerie of marzipan. Or…I should elaborate….Chef Paul told us to each make 12 pieces of fruit (so we could make a fruit basket). I got tired of making fruit after doing about 4 pieces, so decided to make marizpan ‘others’ as well.
Here’s what I made:
4. Watermelon slice
5. Strawberry (this is where i got tired of making fruit and moved on to… animals!)
9. Penguin (so then I got bored of animals and moved on again to… food!)
10. Hot dog
13. Baby block
Shapes are molded out of marzipan (raw almond paste, glucose and icing sugar), and left to form a skin overnight. The next day, they are airbrushed. Colours all appear a lot more vivid for some reason if sprayed yellow first, before the actual colour is applied.
