Hello, keyboard. It’s been awhile. A long, long while.
I started this blog way back in 2008, when I left my cushy PR job to attend pastry school. I wanted to document life at school – the ups, the downs, the sweet successes (and the epic failures). So many colleagues wanted to stay in the loop with the adventures of life inside culinary school, and this avenue seemed like the easiest way to document things. After graduating in 2009, I kept writing. I documented my life getting my foot in the door at some pretty great restaurants in Vancouver. Even after leaving the professional kitchens in my shadows and starting to do wedding cakes, I still blogged. We moved from Vancouver to the Okanagan, and I worked at one of the best restaurants in the region. And then I stopped…that was 4 years ago.
I wanted to write, but life got in the way. I opened a pastry shop, had a baby…life looked like this.
This little munchkin turned my world upside down in all of the best ways. She tagged along to my farmers markets, she napped at my shop. But as she got older, it was hard to keep it up. Multitasking to the max, day in, day out. Life was sweet but oh-so-busy, and I was having trouble focusing on enjoying the little moments, when there were SO MANY big things to be responsible for. I wished for time to stop, to soak in her smallness and newness. So I closed my doors to walk-ins, and savoured time with my little miss, and focussed on just custom cakes, when my schedule could be mine and mine alone.
But I’m back now. I miss writing. I want Sweet Pursuits to become a part of my life now – to have a place to write and share pictures. After all, while life these days still has a fair bit of time logged in the kitchen, there is now so much more. Life is sweet in SO many ways now. I have not one, but TWO sweet little munchkins (Clara, already aged 2, and Zach, born last year).
In addition to baking and creating wedding and occasion cakes, we grow apples on our small orchard, and are busy trying to organize and personalize our new-to-us home. Our days are SO full with baby-raising fun, apple orchard work, plus organizing/cleaning/upgrading our new home, so there is plenty that I want to explore with this blog. Being up at all hours of the night with my little man, I have plenty of time to read blogs that inspire me, and decided it’s time to create my own. Thank you for reading along, and I hope to provide lots of entertaining, and useful, posts about Family, Home, Food&Baking, and even some Fitness posts as I work to get my pre-baby fitness back! And if you’re interested, please check out the archives — all my Pastry School posts are still there!
